About this tool

What the Cover Crop Cost-benefit Calculator does

Cover crops cost seed, planting and termination, but can return value through nitrogen credits, reduced erosion and herbicide use, grazing, yield effects and cost-share payments. Comparing them per acre shows the net return and the share of cost covered.

Formula

  • Cost = seed + planting + termination
  • Benefits = N credit × N price + yield effect × price + grazing + other savings + cost-share
  • Net = benefits − cost

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Seed cost per acre $22.00
Planting cost per acre $15.00
Termination cost per acre $12.00
Nitrogen credit 20 lb/acre
Nitrogen price per lb $0.60
Yield effect on next crop 2 bu/acre
Crop price per bu $4.30
Grazing or forage value per acre $0.00
Other savings per acre (herbicide, erosion) $5.00
Cost-share payment per acre $25.00
Acres 200
Result Value
Net return per acre $1.60
Benefit-cost ratio 1.03x
Cost per acre $49.00
Benefits per acre $50.60
Net return across acres $320
Net return without cost-share -$23.40

How to read the result

Benefits such as soil organic matter and water infiltration build over several years and are hard to value in year one.

Grazing cover crops can turn a cost into a profit when livestock are available.

Estimates for planning. Use soil tests, local extension guidance and your agronomist’s recommendations for field decisions.
