About this tool
What the Personal Injury Case Value Estimator does
Insurers and lawyers often estimate personal injury claims with the multiplier method: economic losses (medical bills, lost wages, property damage) plus pain and suffering estimated as medical costs times a multiplier, commonly 1.5 to 5 depending on severity. Shared fault reduces the total in most states.
It also works as a case value estimator or a personal injury settlement calculator.
Formula
- Economic damages = medical + future medical + lost income + property damage
- Pain and suffering = medical costs × multiplier
- Claim value = (economic + pain and suffering) × (1 − your fault share)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Medical expenses to date | $25,000 |
| Future medical costs | $5,000 |
| Lost income | $12,000 |
| Property damage | $3,000 |
| Pain and suffering multiplier | 2.5 |
| Your share of fault | 0% |
| Attorney fee | 33.33% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated claim value | $120,000 |
| After attorney fee | $80,004 |
| Lower estimate | $90,000 |
| Higher estimate | $150,000 |
| Economic damages | $45,000 |
| Pain and suffering estimate | $75,000 |
How to read the result
The multiplier method is a negotiation starting point, not a legal formula. Evidence, jurisdiction, insurance limits and the defendant’s ability to pay often decide the real figure.
Some states bar recovery if your share of fault reaches 50% or 51%; a few bar it for any fault.
General information only, not legal advice. Laws and court practice vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified lawyer.
