About this tool
What the Billable Hours Calculator does
Lawyers and consultants typically bill in increments, most often a tenth of an hour (six minutes), rounding each entry up. This calculator rounds each time entry to your increment, applies each entry’s rate and totals the invoice, showing how much the rounding adds.
It also works as a billable hours tracker or a legal time entry calculator.
Formula
- Billed hours per entry = minutes rounded up to the increment ÷ 60
- Fee = billed hours × rate
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Time entries | 4 entries |
| Billing increment | 0.1 hour (6 minutes) |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total fees | $860.00 |
| Billable hours | 2.80 |
| Actual hours worked | 2.67 |
| Hours added by rounding | 0.13 |
How to read the result
Record time as you go; reconstructing time later loses billable work and invites disputes.
Many clients now ask for task-level descriptions; clear entries make invoices easier to approve.
General information only, not legal advice. Laws and court practice vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified lawyer.
