About this tool

What the Bank Reconciliation Calculator does

A bank reconciliation explains the difference between the bank statement balance and the cash balance in your books. Timing items such as deposits in transit and outstanding cheques adjust the bank side; fees, interest and returned cheques adjust the book side. When both adjusted balances match, the books are reconciled.

Formula

  • Adjusted bank = statement balance + deposits in transit − outstanding cheques ± bank errors
  • Adjusted book = book balance − fees + interest − returned cheques ± book errors
  • Difference = adjusted bank − adjusted book

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Bank statement balance $25,400
Deposits in transit $3,200
Outstanding cheques $4,100
Bank errors (+/−) $0.00
Book balance $24,865
Bank fees not recorded $45.00
Interest earned not recorded $30.00
Returned (NSF) cheques $350
Book errors (+/−) $0.00
Result Value
Status Reconciled
Unexplained difference $0.00
Adjusted bank balance $24,500.00
Adjusted book balance $24,500.00

How to read the result

A difference that divides exactly by 9 often signals transposed digits, such as 54 entered as 45.

Book-side adjustments need journal entries; bank-side items do not, because they will clear on the next statement.
