Calculators
VAT Calculator
Works in both directions, which is the part people usually get wrong.
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
The tool
Enter an amount and a rate, and say whether the amount already includes VAT.
Everything you enter stays on your own machine. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, which you can confirm in your browser network tab.
What people use it for
- Working out the net figure from a gross invoice total
- Adding VAT to a quote before sending it
- Checking a supplier invoice adds up
- Converting between net and gross pricing on a website
- Calculating tax at a reduced or non-standard rate
About this tool
Both directions
Adding VAT takes straightforward multiplication. Removing it is where mistakes happen: subtracting twenty per cent from a gross figure does not give you the net, because the twenty per cent was calculated on the smaller number. The correct operation is dividing by 1.2, which this does for you.
Treat the result as indicative
Rates vary by jurisdiction and by what is being sold, reduced and zero rates exist, and rounding rules for invoices differ between tax authorities. This calculator does the arithmetic. It does not know which rate applies to your transaction, and it is not tax advice.
Rounding on invoices
Tax authorities differ on whether VAT is rounded per line or per invoice, and on which direction. On a single figure the difference is pennies; across a long invoice it can be enough to fail a reconciliation. Check the rule that applies to you before building it into a system.
