What the Volunteer Hour Value Calculator does
Volunteer time is commonly valued at an hourly rate published by Independent Sector for the US and each state. Multiplying total hours by that rate gives the contribution value, and dividing hours by 2,080 shows how many full-time staff the volunteers represent.
Formula
- Value = general hours × hourly value + skilled hours × skilled rate
- FTE = total hours ÷ 2,080

How to read the result
For accounting under US GAAP, only specialised skills that would otherwise be purchased are recorded as revenue; general volunteer time is reported separately.
Track hours as they happen; estimates made at year end are usually too low.
