About this tool
What the Study Hours Planner does
A common university guideline is two to three hours of study outside class for every credit hour per week. For an exam, estimating the hours each topic needs and dividing by the days left gives a daily target with time held back for review.
It also works as a study time planner or a study schedule calculator.
Formula
- Weekly study = credits × hours per credit
- Exam hours = topic hours ÷ (1 − review share)
- Daily revision = exam hours ÷ days left
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Credit hours this term | 15 |
| Study hours per credit per week | 2 |
| Exam topics | 4 entries |
| Days until the exam | 10 |
| Time reserved for final review | 20% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Weekly study hours (term) | 30.0 |
| Daily exam revision hours | 2.4 |
| Total exam preparation hours | 23.8 |
| Average study hours per day (term) | 4.3 |
How to read the result
Spaced practice over several days beats cramming the same hours the night before.
Active recall and practice questions are more effective than rereading notes.
