About this tool
What the Lime and Soil Amendment Rate Calculator does
Soil test lime recommendations assume a standard material, usually 100% effective calcium carbonate equivalent (ECCE), mixed into a set depth. Real products differ in purity and fineness, so the rate is adjusted by the product’s ECCE and by the ratio of your incorporation depth to the recommendation depth.
It also works as a soil amendment rate calculator or a lime requirement calculator.
Formula
- Product rate = recommendation × 100 ÷ ECCE × (your depth ÷ recommendation depth)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended rate (100% ECCE) | 2 tons/acre |
| Product ECCE | 75% |
| Depth the recommendation assumes | 6.7 in |
| Your incorporation depth | 6.7 in |
| Acres | 40 |
| Product price per ton, spread | $45.00 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Product rate (tons/acre) | 2.67 |
| Total product (tons) | 106.7 |
| Cost per acre | $120 |
| Total cost | $4,800 |
How to read the result
Compare liming products on price per ton of ECCE, not price per ton of product.
Lime takes months to react; apply well ahead of crops sensitive to low pH, such as alfalfa.
Estimates for planning. Use soil tests, local extension guidance and your agronomist’s recommendations for field decisions.

Questions
Questions about this tool
The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.
Effective calcium carbonate equivalent: a lime product's neutralising value adjusted for fineness.
Recommendations neutralise a set soil depth; a shallower or deeper layer needs proportionally less or more lime.
The depth and purity adjustments apply, but use the specific recommendation for that product.
