About this tool
What the Bonus Tax Calculator does
US employers often withhold federal tax from bonuses at a flat 22% supplemental rate (37% on amounts over 1 million), plus Social Security, Medicare and state tax. The withholding is not your final tax: it is reconciled when you file. This calculator shows what lands in your account.
It also works as a salary after bonus calculator.
Formula
- Federal withholding = bonus × supplemental rate
- Social Security = 6.2% of the bonus up to the remaining wage base
- Medicare = 1.45% (plus 0.9% on wages above 200,000)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Bonus amount | $10,000 |
| Salary already paid this year | $80,000 |
| Federal supplemental rate | 22% |
| State withholding rate | 5% |
| Social Security wage base | $184,500 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Bonus take-home | $6,535 |
| Share you keep | 65.4% |
| Federal withholding | $2,200 |
| Social Security and Medicare | $765 |
| State withholding | $500 |
How to read the result
If 22% is more than your real marginal rate, part of the withholding comes back as a refund; if your rate is higher, you may owe more.
Putting part of a bonus into a 401(k), where your plan allows, reduces the income tax withheld.
