About this tool
The three answers
Given two numbers, this gives the share one is of the other, the plain difference, and the percentage change from the second to the first. Most percentage questions are one of those three.
Percentage points are not percentages
A rate moving from two per cent to three per cent has risen by one percentage point, and by fifty per cent. Both statements hold, and they sound very different, which is why reporting abuses the distinction. When a figure sounds surprising, check which one is being quoted.
Increases and decreases are not symmetrical
A value that falls by fifty per cent needs to rise by one hundred per cent to get back. This trips people up constantly when reading reports, because the two figures describe the same movement and sound completely different.
