About this tool

What the Options Profit and Loss Calculator does

An option’s value at expiry depends only on the stock price and the strike. A long call profits above strike plus premium; a long put profits below strike minus premium; sellers take the opposite side. This calculator shows the result at your chosen price and across a range of prices.

Formula

  • Call value at expiry = max(0, price − strike); put = max(0, strike − price)
  • Long P/L = (value − premium) × shares; short P/L is the opposite
  • Break-even: call = strike + premium; put = strike − premium

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Option type Call
Position Long (bought)
Strike price $100
Premium per share $3.50
Contracts 2
Shares per contract 100
Stock price at expiry $110
Result Value
Profit or loss at that price $1,300
Break-even stock price $103.50
Maximum gain Unlimited
Maximum loss $700
Premium paid or received $700

How to read the result

Selling calls without owning the shares has unlimited risk. Brokers require margin, and losses can exceed the premium many times over.

This shows the result at expiry only. Before expiry, option prices also reflect time value and volatility.

For education only, not investment advice. Past returns do not guarantee future results.
