About this tool
What the Operating Leverage Calculator does
Operating leverage measures how sensitive profit is to sales. Businesses with high fixed costs and low variable costs have high leverage: a small rise in sales produces a large rise in profit, and a small fall can wipe profit out. The degree of operating leverage (DOL) is contribution margin divided by operating income.
Formula
- Contribution margin = sales − variable costs
- DOL = contribution margin ÷ operating income
- % change in operating profit = DOL × % change in sales
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Sales | $500,000 |
| Variable costs | $300,000 |
| Fixed costs | $120,000 |
| Expected change in sales | 10% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Degree of operating leverage | 2.50x |
| Change in operating profit | 25.0% |
| Operating income now | $80,000 |
| Operating income after the change | $100,000 |
How to read the result
DOL is highest just above break-even and falls as profit grows, so it is a snapshot for the current sales level, not a constant.
High operating leverage rewards growth but makes downturns painful. Turning some fixed costs into variable ones, such as outsourcing, reduces the risk.
