Meta Length Checker for Titles and Descriptions

Check that your title and description fit before you publish, rather than discovering the truncation afterwards.

  • Runs in your browser
  • Nothing uploaded

The tool

Paste a title and description to see how they measure up.

Everything you enter stays on your own machine. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, which you can confirm in your browser network tab.

What people use it for

  • Checking a new page before publishing it
  • Auditing existing titles that may be truncating in results
  • Writing descriptions to a consistent house length
  • Comparing two versions of a title side by side
  • Training a content team on the ranges that matter

About this tool

The ranges, and why they are only guidance

Search engines usually display a title tag at around fifty to sixty characters, and a meta description at around one hundred and forty to one hundred and fifty-eight. Those are the ranges this tool checks against.

They are guidance rather than rules. Search engines measure pixel width rather than characters, so a title full of capital letters truncates sooner than one in lower case. They also rewrite descriptions frequently, particularly when the page contains a passage that answers the search better than your description does.

What matters more than length

A description that accurately describes the page will outperform one that hits the character count precisely but reads like filler. Write for the person deciding whether to click, then check the length.

Front-load the important words

Because truncation happens at the end, a title that leads with its point still works when cut short. One that opens with your company name and reaches the subject at character fifty does not. The same applies to descriptions: assume nobody reaches the last few words.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Usually because the page contains text that answers the search more directly. Search engines keep a well-written description more often, though never always.

No. Search engines measure pixel width, so a title in capitals truncates sooner than the same character count in lower case.

Not directly. It affects whether someone clicks, which matters commercially regardless.

Put the important words first. A truncated title that leads with the point still works; one that truncates before it is useless.

No. Your browser checks the lengths against published guidance ranges.
