About this tool

What the Board Foot Calculator does

Hardwood and rough lumber is often priced by the board foot: a volume of 144 cubic inches, equal to a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long. Multiply thickness by width in inches and length in feet, then divide by 12.

It also works as a lumber board foot calculator.

Formula

  • Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12 × quantity

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Lumber list 3 entries
Result Value
Total board feet 47.33
Total cost $353

How to read the result

Rough lumber is priced on its nominal rough size; planing reduces the finished size, so order thicker stock than the final dimension.

Hardwood thickness is often quoted in quarters: 4/4 is 1 inch, 8/4 is 2 inches.

Quantities are estimates. Check product data sheets and local codes, and confirm with your supplier before ordering.
