About this tool
What the Late Rent Fee Calculator does
Leases often set an initial late fee once a grace period ends, sometimes followed by a daily charge, with an overall cap. Many jurisdictions limit late fees to a reasonable amount. This calculator applies your lease terms to the number of days rent is late.
Formula
- No fee within the grace period
- Fee = initial fee + daily fee × days late beyond the first day after grace
- Total fee is limited to the cap
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly rent | $1,800 |
| Initial fee type | Flat amount |
| Initial late fee | 75 |
| Grace period | 5 days |
| Daily fee after grace | $10.00 |
| Days late | 10 |
| Maximum total fee (% of rent, 0 = none) | 10% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Late fee due | $115.00 |
| Total due with rent | $1,915.00 |
| Status | Late fee applies |
| Fee as share of rent | 6.4% |
How to read the result
Many states and countries cap late fees or require them to be reasonable; a fee that is not in the lease usually cannot be charged.
Clear reminders before the due date and easy online payment reduce late payments more than higher fees.
Late fee rules vary by jurisdiction. Check local law before charging.
