About this tool
What the HVAC Replacement Cost Estimator does
Replacing an HVAC system costs the equipment, installation labour, any ductwork changes, a thermostat, removal of the old system and permits, minus any rebates or incentives. This estimator builds the budget so you can compare proposals for an air conditioner, heat pump or furnace.
It also works as a HVAC system replacement cost estimator.
Formula
- Gross = equipment + hours × rate + ductwork + thermostat + removal + permit
- Net = gross − rebates
- Payback = net cost ÷ annual energy saving
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Equipment (outdoor and indoor units) | $6,500 |
| Installation hours | 16 |
| Labour rate | $120 |
| Ductwork modifications | $1,500 |
| Thermostat | $250 |
| Removal and disposal | $300 |
| Permit | $300 |
| Rebates and incentives | $0.00 |
| Annual energy saving (optional) | $450 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Net cost after rebates | $10,770 |
| Cost before rebates | $10,770 |
| Labour | $1,920 |
| Payback from energy savings | 23.9 years |
How to read the result
Efficiency ratings (SEER2, HSPF2, AFUE) affect running costs for years; compare annual energy cost as well as price.
Heat pumps may qualify for utility or government incentives; check what is available where you live.
For planning only. Electrical, gas and refrigerant work must follow current codes and be carried out or checked by a licensed professional.

Questions about this tool
The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.
It depends on system type, size, efficiency and installation complexity; quotes for the same home can differ a lot.
Many contractors suggest replacing when a repair costs a large share of a new system and the unit is near the end of its life.
Commonly 12 to 20 years depending on equipment and maintenance.
