About this tool

What the Floor Plan Scale Calculator does

Floor plans are drawn to scale: 1/4 inch to 1 foot in US architectural drawings, or ratios such as 1:50 and 1:100 in metric drawings. This calculator converts a distance measured on the drawing into real size, and a real size into the length to draw.

Formula

  • Architectural: real feet = drawing inches × scale ratio ÷ 12
  • Metric: real metres = drawing centimetres × scale ratio ÷ 100
  • Reverse the calculation to find the drawing length

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Drawing scale 1/4 in = 1 ft (1:48)
Length on the drawing 3.5
Real length to draw 14
Result Value
Real length 14.00
Length to draw 3.50

How to read the result

Printed or PDF plans may not be at their stated scale. Check against a known dimension on the drawing before measuring.

A scale ruler with the same scale avoids the arithmetic for quick checks.

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Every quarter inch on the drawing represents one foot of real length, a ratio of 1:48.

Each centimetre on the drawing is one metre in real life.

The drawing may have been printed at a different size from the original scale.
