About this tool
What the FIRE Calculator does
FIRE (financial independence, retire early) treats independence as having invested assets large enough that a safe withdrawal rate covers your annual spending. At a 4% withdrawal rate that is 25 times annual expenses. This calculator finds that number and how long your savings will take to reach it.
Formula
- FIRE number = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate
- Each year: invested = invested × (1 + real return) + annual savings
- Savings rate = annual savings ÷ take-home income
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual expenses | $40,000 |
| Withdrawal rate | 4% |
| Invested today | $150,000 |
| Annual take-home income | $90,000 |
| Annual savings | $30,000 |
| Real return (after inflation) | 5% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| FIRE number | $1,000,000 |
| Years to financial independence | 16 years |
| Savings rate | 33.3% |
| Progress today | 15.0% |
How to read the result
Your savings rate matters more than your return. Raising it shortens the journey twice: you save more and need less.
A 4% withdrawal rate comes from historical US studies over 30-year retirements. For early retirement lasting 40 years or more, many people plan on 3% to 3.5%.
