About this tool

What the Fence Material Calculator does

A fence is built in sections between posts. The number of sections comes from the fence length and post spacing; each section needs rails, and pickets cover the length at their width plus gap. Each post is usually set in concrete.

Formula

  • Sections = length ÷ post spacing (rounded up)
  • Posts = sections + 1 + one extra per gate
  • Pickets = length × 12 ÷ (picket width + gap) × (1 + waste)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Fence length 150 ft
Post spacing 8 ft
Gates 1
Rails per section 3
Picket width 5.5 in
Gap between pickets 0.5 in
Concrete bags per post 2
Picket waste 5%
Result Value
Posts 21
Pickets 315
Rails 57
Sections 19
Concrete bags 42

How to read the result

Set posts below the frost line where the ground freezes; deeper holes need more concrete.

Check boundary lines and local height limits before building, and call before digging to locate utilities.

Quantities are estimates. Check product data sheets and local codes, and confirm with your supplier before ordering.
