About this tool
What the Emergency Fund Calculator does
An emergency fund covers essential expenses if income stops or a large unexpected bill arrives. A common guideline is three to six months of essential spending, more for the self-employed or single-income households. This calculator sets the target and shows when you will reach it.
Formula
- Target = essential monthly expenses × months of cover
- Gap = target − amount saved
- Months to reach = gap ÷ monthly saving
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Essential monthly expenses | $3,200 |
| Months of cover | 6 months |
| Already saved | $8,000 |
| Monthly saving towards it | $400 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Emergency fund target | $19,200 |
| Still to save | $11,200 |
| Months to reach it | 28 months |
| Months covered today | 2.5 |
How to read the result
Base the target on essential spending, not your full budget; in an emergency you would cut discretionary costs.
Keep the fund in an easy-access account separate from everyday spending, so it is available but not tempting.
