About this tool

What the Churn Rate Calculator does

Churn rate is the share of customers lost during a period, measured against the customers you started with. This calculator also annualises a monthly rate, converts it to an average customer lifetime and, if you add MRR, measures revenue churn.

Formula

  • Churn rate = customers lost ÷ customers at the start × 100
  • Annualised churn = 1 − (1 − period churn)^(periods per year)
  • Average lifetime = 1 ÷ churn rate (in periods)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Customers at the start 1,200
Customers lost 60
New customers 150
Period Month
MRR at the start (optional) $60,000
MRR lost (optional) $2,400
Result Value
Churn rate for the period 5.00%
Annualised churn 46.0%
Average customer lifetime 20 months
Customers at the end 1,290
Revenue churn 4.00%

How to read the result

Do not divide by the end-of-period count or include new customers in the denominator; both understate churn when you are growing.

Annualising compounds the rate. A 5% monthly churn is about 46% a year, not 60%, because each month churns from a smaller base.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Divide the number of customers lost in a period by the number you had at the start of it, then multiply by 100.

Customer churn counts accounts lost. Revenue churn measures the recurring revenue lost, which weights larger customers more heavily.

Annual churn = 1 − (1 − monthly churn)^12. A 2% monthly churn is about 21.5% a year.
