About this tool
What the Child Support Calculator does
Most US states use the income shares model: combine both parents’ incomes, look up the basic support obligation for that combined income and number of children in the state schedule, then split it in proportion to income. Childcare and health insurance costs are usually added, and some states adjust for shared parenting time.
It also works as a child support guideline calculator.
Formula
- Total obligation = basic obligation + childcare + children’s health insurance
- Payer share = payer income ÷ combined income
- Support = total obligation × payer share × (1 − parenting-time reduction)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Parent A monthly income | $6,000 |
| Parent B monthly income | $3,500 |
| Basic obligation from your state schedule | $1,650 |
| Monthly childcare costs | $400 |
| Monthly children’s health insurance | $200 |
| Paying parent | Parent A |
| Parenting-time reduction for the payer | 0% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated monthly child support | $1,421 |
| Paying parent’s income share | 63.2% |
| Total child support obligation | $2,250 |
| Combined monthly income | $9,500 |
