About this tool
What the Calories Burned Calculator does
A MET (metabolic equivalent of task) expresses an activity’s energy cost relative to sitting still. Calories burned ≈ MET × body weight in kg × hours. MET values for common activities come from the Compendium of Physical Activities.
Formula
- Calories ≈ MET × weight (kg) × hours
- Net calories (above resting) ≈ (MET − 1) × weight × hours
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Body weight | 75 kg |
| Activity | Running, 6 mph (9.8 MET) |
| Duration | 45 minutes |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Calories burned | 551 |
| Above resting | 495 |
| Per minute | 12.3 |
How to read the result
Fitness trackers and gym machines often overestimate calories burned; use these numbers as estimates, not exact values.
Net calories are what exercise adds beyond what you would burn anyway at rest.
