About this tool
What the CAGR Calculator does
Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is the steady yearly rate that would take a value from its starting point to its ending point over a number of years. It smooths out volatile years into one comparable figure, which makes it the standard way to compare investments and business growth.
Formula
- CAGR = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1
- Doubling time = ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + CAGR)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Starting value | $10,000 |
| Ending value | $18,000 |
| Years | 5 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| CAGR | 12.47% |
| Total return | 80.0% |
| Doubling time at this rate | 5.9 years |
How to read the result
CAGR hides volatility: two investments with the same CAGR can have had very different journeys. Look at year-by-year returns for risk.
If you added or withdrew money along the way, use the IRR calculator instead, because CAGR assumes a single starting amount.

Questions
Questions about this tool
The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.
Divide the ending value by the starting value, raise the result to the power of one divided by the number of years, and subtract one.
It depends on the asset and risk. Broad stock markets have historically delivered high single-digit long-term CAGRs.
No. The average of yearly returns is usually higher than CAGR when returns vary.
