About this tool

What the Burn Rate and Runway Calculator does

Burn rate is how fast a company spends cash. Gross burn is total monthly spending; net burn subtracts revenue. Runway is the number of months until the cash runs out. This calculator also lets revenue grow each month, which extends runway.

Formula

  • Gross burn = monthly operating expenses
  • Net burn = expenses − revenue
  • Runway = cash ÷ net burn (simulated month by month when revenue or expenses grow)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Cash in the bank $900,000
Monthly operating expenses $115,000
Monthly revenue $40,000
Monthly revenue growth 0%
Monthly expense growth 0%
Result Value
Runway 12 months
Net burn per month $75,000
Gross burn per month $115,000
Self-sustaining No

How to read the result

Use net burn for runway, but watch gross burn too: it shows how much you would need to cut if revenue stalled.

Revenue growth can turn a short runway into a long one. If growth makes the company self-sustaining before cash runs out, the calculator says so.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Gross burn is total cash spent each month. Net burn is gross burn minus cash coming in from revenue.

Many investors suggest 18 to 24 months after a raise, and starting the next raise with at least 9 to 12 months left.

Divide cash in the bank by monthly net burn. If revenue or costs change each month, simulate the months instead.
