About this tool

What the Accessible Ramp Calculator does

Accessible ramps limit how steep and how long each run can be. Under the US ADA Standards, the steepest slope allowed is 1:12, with a maximum rise of 30 inches per run before a level landing at least 60 inches long. This calculator lays out the ramp for your rise.

It also works as a accessibility clearance calculator or a ADA ramp calculator.

Formula

  • Ramp length = rise × slope ratio (12 for 1:12)
  • Runs = rise ÷ maximum rise per run (rounded up)
  • Total = ramp length + landings × landing length + top and bottom landings

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Total rise 24 in
Slope 1:12 (steepest allowed)
Maximum rise per run 30 in
Landing length 60 in
Result Value
Ramp length (sloped sections) 24.0
Total length with top, bottom and intermediate landings 34.0
Ramp runs 1
Intermediate landings 0
Slope angle 4.76

How to read the result

A gentler 1:16 or 1:20 slope is much easier for many users, at the cost of a longer ramp.

Handrails, edge protection and landing size at turns also have requirements; check the standards that apply in your jurisdiction.

Based on the 2010 US ADA Standards. Check the accessibility rules that apply to your project.

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

At a 1:12 slope, one foot of ramp for every inch of rise, so a 24 inch rise needs a 24 foot ramp.

Under the ADA Standards, at the top and bottom and after every 30 inches of rise.

Other countries have their own standards with similar but not identical figures.
