What Is Answer Engine Optimisation?

Conventional SEO competes for a place in a list of links. Answer engine optimisation competes to supply the answer shown above that list.

  • 1 October 2026

Key points

  • AEO competes to supply the answer, not to rank in a list of links
  • A page can rank well and still lose the answer to a competitor
  • Each question needs its own heading with a self-contained answer beneath it
  • Answers must make sense when quoted away from the page
  • Schema must describe content the visitor can actually see, or engines ignore it
  • AEO and GEO solve different problems and usually run together

The short version

Answer engine optimisation structures your content so a machine can take a clean, complete answer out of it. Conventional search optimisation competes for a position in a list of links. Answer engine optimisation competes to supply the answer that appears above that list, or the one an assistant reads aloud.

Why it became a separate discipline

A growing share of searches end on the results page. The person gets their answer and never clicks anything. That changes what winning looks like: a page can rank respectably and still receive nothing, because the engine lifted the answer from someone else.

Content that ranks well can still resist extraction. If the answer to a question spreads across four paragraphs and depends on what came before it, a machine cannot take it cleanly, so it takes someone else.

What the work involves

Partly structure and partly writing. On structure: give each question a heading of its own, and mark up FAQs, how-to steps and organisation details so an engine reads the page unambiguously. On writing: put a short, self-contained answer directly under each question, phrased so it still makes sense when somebody quotes it out of context.

Honesty matters in the markup. Schema describing content a visitor cannot see breaks the guidelines, and engines then ignore or penalise it. Every FAQ you mark up needs to appear on the page.

How it differs from GEO

Answer engine optimisation makes your pages extractable. Generative engine optimisation works on whether an assistant trusts and names your business at all. They share foundations and most organisations run them together, but they solve different problems.

No. They share foundations, but conventional SEO competes for a position in a list of links while AEO competes to supply the answer above it.

No. Clearer structure, honest markup and answers matching search intent help ordinary ranking too, so the two reinforce each other.

No. Start with pages that already attract question-shaped searches, since those return the most for the least disruption.

Yes, when it is honest. Markup describing content a visitor cannot see gets ignored or penalised, so keep every marked-up FAQ visible on the page.

By whether engines quote your pages as the answer and whether that answer stays accurate, alongside conventional ranking and traffic.

Find which source it draws from and correct that source. Monitoring exists largely to catch this.
