What makes a good slug
Short, readable, and made of the words someone would actually search for. A slug is one of the few parts of a URL a person reads before clicking, and it appears in search results, so it is worth a moment of thought.
Hyphens rather than underscores, because search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a joiner. Lower case throughout, because some servers treat URLs as case-sensitive and mixed case invites duplicate pages.
Changing an existing slug
Changing the slug of a published page changes its URL, which breaks every existing link to it unless you add a redirect. If a page has any history, the small improvement to the slug is rarely worth the disruption.
Length and readability
The tool caps the output so URLs stay manageable. A slug that runs to a full sentence reads poorly, shares awkwardly and often truncates on display. Three to six meaningful words is usually the sweet spot.
The tool keeps numbers, since they often carry meaning such as a year or a model. Every other non-alphanumeric character becomes a hyphen.
