Why redesigns lose traffic
It is depressingly common: a business invests in a better-looking site and organic traffic drops by half within a month. The causes are consistent and entirely preventable.
- URLs changed without redirects. Every old URL that now returns a 404 loses whatever rankings and links it had.
- Content removed. Pages that looked unimportant internally were often the ones bringing in traffic.
- Staging noindex left in place. Simple, common, and catastrophic until someone notices.
- Slower than the old site. A heavier design can undo years of performance work.
- Structure flattened. Losing internal linking depth reduces how authority flows through the site.
What we do differently
Audit before designing
We start by establishing what currently works — which pages bring traffic, which rank, which have backlinks, and what the current performance baseline is. You cannot protect what you have not measured.
Map every URL
Every existing URL is mapped to its new destination before launch. Anything with traffic, rankings or inbound links gets a 301 redirect to the closest equivalent. Nothing is redirected to the homepage as a catch-all, which search engines treat as a soft 404.
Keep what earns its place
Content that performs gets carried across, improved rather than discarded. It is surprisingly common for a redesign to delete the single page responsible for most of a site’s organic traffic because nobody checked.
Benchmark performance
We record Core Web Vitals before and after. A redesign that looks better and performs worse is a net loss, and we would rather know before launch than after.
After launch
The first month matters. We monitor indexation, watch for crawl errors, check that redirects are being followed, and track rankings against the pre-launch baseline. Problems caught in week one are straightforward; problems found in month three have already cost you.
Is a redesign the right answer?
Sometimes not. If the site is structurally sound and the problem is content, messaging or speed, targeted work costs a fraction of a full rebuild. We will tell you if that is the case — including when the honest answer is that your site is fine and the money is better spent elsewhere.
