Promises that should worry you
- Guaranteed first-page rankings. Nobody controls the index. Anyone guaranteeing position is either targeting terms nobody searches for or is not being straight with you.
- Results in 30 days. Technical fixes can move quickly. Competitive rankings take months.
- A fixed number of links per month. Promising volume drives agencies toward low-quality sources, which eventually causes harm.
- Secret methods. There are no secrets, only disciplined execution.
- Very cheap monthly packages. Usually automated reports, spun content and links that will need disavowing later.
What honest SEO actually involves
Three things, done together over time.
Technical — making sure search engines can crawl, render and index the site efficiently. Usually the fastest wins, because it removes barriers rather than building anything new.
On-page — making each page the best available answer to one specific query. Intent mapping, content depth, structure and internal linking.
Off-page — earning references from credible sources through digital PR rather than buying placements.
Realistic timelines
Technical fixes: weeks. Content improvements on existing pages: one to three months. New content ranking: three to six months. Competitive commercial terms: six to twelve months or more.
The first three months of most engagements look disappointing. That is normal, and it is the point at which most SEO contracts get cancelled just before they begin working.
Questions to ask any SEO agency
- What will you actually do in month one, specifically?
- How do you acquire links, and can I see recent examples?
- What will you report on, and against what baseline?
- What is the notice period?
- Which terms do you think are realistic, and which are not worth chasing?
The last question is the most revealing. An agency willing to tell you a term is not worth the budget is one worth listening to.
How we work
We start with a baseline audit so progress is measurable rather than asserted. We report monthly against that baseline, including when something has not worked. Retainers run month to month with 30 days notice — we would rather keep clients by producing results than by contract.
And we will tell you when SEO is not your priority. If your conversion rate is the problem, more traffic will not fix it.
