Do you actually need custom?
A useful test: describe your requirement to someone knowledgeable. If they can name three existing products that already do it, you probably do not need custom development — you need one of those products configured properly.
Custom is justified when your process genuinely does not fit anything available, when integration between existing systems is the actual problem, or when the software is itself the product.
When it is the right call
- Client portals where customers need secure access to their own data.
- Booking and quoting systems with pricing logic no off-the-shelf tool supports.
- Internal dashboards pulling data from several systems into one view.
- Integrations making separate systems talk to each other so data stops being re-keyed.
- Membership platforms with unusual access or billing rules.
What it costs, and why
Custom development starts around £4,500 for something focused and rises quickly with complexity. The cost is rarely the interface — it is the backend. Authentication, permissions, data modelling, integrations, testing and the edge cases nobody mentions in the brief account for most of the work.
We quote fixed prices against a written specification, which means investing properly in discovery first. That front-loaded effort is what makes the estimate reliable.
Avoiding the usual failures
Custom projects fail in predictable ways. Scope that was never written down. Requirements discovered halfway through. No automated tests, so every change breaks something. No documentation, so the next developer has to reverse-engineer it.
We write the specification before estimating, build automated coverage on critical paths, work in two-week sprints with a live staging environment from the first one, and document the architecture as we go.
You should be able to leave
Every custom project we deliver comes with architecture notes, API documentation, environment setup instructions and commented code — specifically so another team could take it over.
That is a deliberate part of what you are paying for. Software you cannot hand to anyone else is a liability, however well it works today.
