llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file, placed at yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives large language models a concise summary of your site and links to its most useful content. It was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI.
Every few months a new “must-have” file appears in the search marketing world. In 2025 and 2026, that file was llms.txt. Social posts promised it would “get you into ChatGPT”, plugins rushed to generate it, and agencies began selling it as a service.
This guide separates fact from hype. We explain what llms.txt is, how it compares with robots.txt and XML sitemaps, what evidence exists about who reads it, and when it is genuinely worth adding for businesses in the US, UK, Canada and beyond.
What Is llms.txt?
The llms.txt proposal suggests a simple Markdown file at the root of a website. Its purpose is to help AI models and tools quickly find the most important information without parsing complex HTML, navigation menus, scripts and adverts.
The proposed format
- An H1 with the name of the site or project (the only required element).
- A blockquote with a short summary.
- Optional paragraphs with key details.
- H2 sections containing lists of links to important pages, each with a short description.
- An optional section of secondary links that can be skipped when context is limited.
Some sites also publish llms-full.txt, a single file containing the full text of key documentation, so a model can read it all at once.
A minimal llms.txt for a web agency might contain: a title line “# Best Web Developer”; a one-sentence summary of services and locations; a “## Services” section linking to web development, SEO and AI automation pages with one-line descriptions; a “## Guides” section linking to key articles; and a “## Optional” section linking to the blog archive and tools.
How Is llms.txt Different From robots.txt and Sitemaps?
| File | Purpose | Standard status | Used by major search engines? |
|---|---|---|---|
| robots.txt | Tells crawlers what they may or may not crawl | Formalised as an internet standard (RFC 9309) | Yes, widely respected |
| XML sitemap | Lists URLs for discovery, with last-modified dates | Long-established sitemaps.org protocol | Yes |
| llms.txt | Curated, Markdown summary of key content for LLMs | Community proposal | Not confirmed by major AI or search providers |
llms.txt does not control access. If you want to allow or block AI crawlers, that is still done with robots.txt and, if needed, server or CDN rules. Our robots.txt generator helps you set crawler rules correctly.
Who Actually Uses llms.txt?
Here is what the public evidence shows:
- Publishers of llms.txt: many developer documentation sites and documentation platforms publish llms.txt and llms-full.txt, often generated automatically. Some AI companies also publish them for their own docs.
- Consumers of llms.txt: developer tools, coding assistants and some AI agents can be pointed at these files to load documentation into context. That is the most proven use case.
- Search and AI answer engines: Google representatives have publicly said Google does not use llms.txt, and major AI search providers have not documented using it to choose citations.
A file nobody reads does not change your visibility. Clear pages that search engines already crawl do.
When Is llms.txt Worth Adding?
Good candidates
- Software, API and SaaS documentation, where developers paste docs into AI coding tools.
- Large knowledge bases where a curated map of the best pages is genuinely useful.
- Sites that want to signal AI-friendliness as part of a broader AI strategy, accepting that the benefit is uncertain.
Lower priority
- Local service businesses: your Google Business Profile, reviews and service pages matter far more.
- Small brochure sites: the whole site is already easy to read.
- Ecommerce stores: product feeds and Product structured data are much more important for AI shopping.
Be cautious of anyone selling llms.txt as a guaranteed way to appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews. There is no public evidence that it produces that result on its own.
How Do You Create an llms.txt File?
- Choose your 10–30 most important pages: core services or products, pricing, about, key guides and policies.
- Write a one- to two-sentence summary of who you are, what you do and where you operate.
- Group links under H2 headings such as Services, Guides, Policies and Tools.
- Add a short description after each link explaining what the page answers.
- Save it as plain text with Markdown at the root: /llms.txt.
- Keep it updated when pages change. A stale file is worse than none.
Count characters and keep descriptions tight with our word counter.
Write your llms.txt summary and your About page “key facts” box from the same source text. Consistent descriptions of your business across your own site and the wider web are a far stronger AI signal than any single file.
What Matters More Than llms.txt for AI Visibility?
| Priority | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Question-led, answer-first content | Gives AI engines extractable answers |
| 2 | Strong technical SEO and indexation | Retrieval systems rely on search indexes |
| 3 | Structured data (Organization, Product, LocalBusiness, Article) | Clarifies entities and facts. Try our Schema Generator |
| 4 | Third-party mentions and reviews | Builds authority and brand associations |
| 5 | Deliberate robots.txt AI crawler policy | Controls access for search and training bots |
| 6 | llms.txt | Optional, low-cost, unproven for search visibility |

Key Benefits and Limitations
Benefits
- Very low cost to create and host.
- Useful for developer tools and agents that load documentation.
- Forces you to identify and summarise your most important content, which is a useful exercise anyway.
Limitations
- No confirmed use by major search engines or AI answer engines.
- Not a standard, and the format could change.
- Needs maintenance to stay accurate.
Use Cases
- A SaaS company publishes llms-full.txt so developers can load its API docs into coding assistants.
- A university creates a curated map of admissions, fees and programme pages for AI tools.
- An agency adds a simple llms.txt while focusing its real effort on content, schema and PR.
Future Trends: Will llms.txt Become a Standard?
It might, or it might be replaced by richer approaches. Possible directions include:
- Formal standards for AI crawling, licensing and attribution, building on robots.txt.
- Content licensing signals that tell AI companies how content may be used.
- Agent-friendly APIs and protocols that let assistants query businesses directly.
- Multilingual AI ecosystems: national programmes such as Saudi Vision 2030 are investing heavily in Arabic-language AI, which will increase demand for machine-readable, multilingual content.
Whatever wins, the same fundamentals apply: clear, accurate, well-structured content from a trusted source.
A Sample llms.txt Structure for a Business Website
If you decide to add the file, keep it short, factual and useful. A typical structure for a service business looks like this:
| Section | What to include | Example content |
|---|---|---|
| Title (H1) | Your business or brand name | Company name |
| Summary (blockquote) | One or two sentences on what you do, for whom and where | “Web design, SEO and AI automation for businesses in the US, UK and Canada.” |
| Services (H2) | Links to core service pages with one-line descriptions | Web development, SEO, AI chatbots |
| Guides (H2) | Links to your most useful articles | Pricing guides, how-to articles, comparisons |
| Company (H2) | About, contact, locations, policies | About page, contact page, privacy policy |
| Optional (H2) | Secondary resources that can be skipped | Blog archive, tools directory |
How Does llms.txt Fit Into an AI Crawler Strategy?
Think of AI readiness in three layers:
- Access: decide which crawlers may visit, using robots.txt and, if necessary, firewall rules. Distinguish search and retrieval crawlers from model-training crawlers.
- Understanding: make content clear with good HTML, headings, structured data and consistent entity information.
- Curation: optionally point AI tools to your best content with llms.txt, and to all URLs with your XML sitemap.
llms.txt sits only in the third layer. Without the first two, it has nothing useful to point to.
llms.txt Myths vs Facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| “llms.txt gets you into ChatGPT.” | No public evidence shows it increases citations on its own. |
| “Google requires llms.txt for AI Overviews.” | Google says normal search eligibility is all that is required, and it does not use llms.txt. |
| “llms.txt can block AI training.” | It does not control access. Use robots.txt and server rules for that. |
| “It is a recognised web standard.” | It is a community proposal, unlike robots.txt, which is an RFC standard. |
| “It is useless.” | It has real value for documentation used by developer tools and AI coding assistants. |
The balanced view: llms.txt is a small, low-risk addition with a narrow proven use. It deserves a place on the list, near the bottom.
Common llms.txt Mistakes
- Listing every URL: that is what a sitemap is for. Curate the best pages.
- Marketing language instead of factual descriptions.
- Linking to pages blocked by robots.txt or behind logins.
- Letting it go stale after site changes.
- Believing it replaces SEO or guarantees AI citations.
Add a reminder to your quarterly SEO checklist: review robots.txt, the XML sitemap and llms.txt together. These three files describe how machines should treat your website, and they should always tell the same story.
Key Terms Explained
- LLM (large language model): the AI model behind tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
- Retrieval: fetching web content at question time to ground an AI answer.
- Training crawler: a bot collecting content to train future AI models.
- Context window: the amount of text a model can consider at once, which is why concise files help tools.
What Can You Do This Week?
- Review robots.txt and confirm you are not blocking search crawlers you want.
- Check your XML sitemap lists only live, indexable pages.
- Write a two-sentence factual summary of your business for your About page.
- If you add llms.txt, list your 10–30 best pages with one-line descriptions.
- Set a quarterly reminder to review all three machine-facing files together.
Small, specific steps taken this week create momentum, and they give you real data to plan the next phase with confidence.
Conclusion: Useful Tool, Not a Magic File
llms.txt is a sensible idea with a narrow, proven use today: helping developer tools and AI agents read documentation. For most business websites in the US, UK and Canada, it is a nice-to-have, not a ranking factor and not a shortcut into AI answers. Add one if it is quick and you will maintain it, but invest your real effort in clear answers, structured data, technical SEO and a strong reputation. Those are what AI systems already reward.
