Most Shopify SEO advice concentrates on the homepage and collection structure. That matters, but product pages are where the money is — they are what people search for and where the purchase decision happens.
Write your own descriptions
If you sell products you did not manufacture, you have probably imported the supplier’s description. So has every other retailer selling the same item. Search engines have no reason to rank your version.
Writing unique descriptions for a large catalogue is genuinely laborious, so prioritise. Start with your highest-margin products, then your highest-traffic ones. Even a few original paragraphs covering the specific questions your customers ask will outperform duplicated supplier copy.
Write for the objection, not the spec sheet
The specification list matters, but what converts is addressing the hesitation. For clothing, that is fit and sizing. For technical products, compatibility. For anything expensive, durability and returns.
Answer these on the product page rather than linking to a policy page. Every click you add is a chance to lose the sale.
Structured data
Product schema lets search engines display price, availability and review ratings directly in results. On a commercial query that visibly improves click-through rate.
Shopify themes vary considerably in how well they implement this. Check your product pages in Google’s Rich Results Test — many themes emit incomplete or invalid Product markup, and it fails silently.
Make sure price and availability stay accurate. Schema that says “in stock” when the product is not damages trust and can lose you rich result eligibility.
Variant URLs and duplication
Shopify generates URLs with variant parameters, and products are also reachable through collection paths. This means multiple URLs serving effectively the same content.
Canonical tags should point to the main product URL. Most decent themes handle this, but it is worth verifying — duplicate product URLs split authority and waste crawl budget, and on a large catalogue that adds up quickly.
Do not neglect collection pages
Collection pages frequently have more ranking potential than individual products, because they target category-level queries with higher volume — “waterproof walking boots” rather than a specific model.
Most collection pages are a heading and a product grid. Adding genuinely useful introductory content, buying guidance and internal links to relevant products or guides makes them far more competitive.
Images
Ecommerce lives on images, and they are usually the largest performance cost. Serve them in modern formats at appropriate dimensions, with descriptive filenames and meaningful alt text.
Alt text should describe the product usefully — “navy waterproof walking boot, side profile” rather than “IMG_4471” or a keyword-stuffed string.
Out-of-stock and discontinued products
Deleting a product page throws away whatever authority and traffic it accumulated. If an item is temporarily unavailable, keep the page, mark availability correctly in schema, and offer alternatives.
For permanently discontinued products with meaningful traffic or backlinks, either keep the page live with a clear explanation and alternatives, or redirect to the closest equivalent product. Redirecting everything to the homepage is treated as a soft 404 and helps nobody.
Reviews
Reviews add unique content to pages that otherwise share a template, answer questions your description missed, and with correct Review schema can produce star ratings in search results.
Ask for them systematically through a post-purchase email flow. Most customers will leave one if asked at the right moment and the process takes under a minute.
Speed
Shopify handles hosting, so the variables you control are theme quality, app count and image handling. Every app that injects JavaScript costs you performance, and most stores accumulate apps they no longer use.
Audit installed apps periodically and remove anything not earning its place. It is usually the quickest available performance win.
