About this tool
What the Tile Calculator does
Tile quantity is the area to cover divided by the area each tile covers, including its share of the grout joint, plus waste for cuts and breakage. Diagonal layouts and large-format tiles produce more waste. Tiles are sold by the box, so the result is rounded up to whole boxes.
It also works as a tile area calculator.
Formula
- Area = length × width
- Tile footprint = (tile width + grout) × (tile length + grout)
- Tiles = area ÷ tile footprint × (1 + waste)

How to read the result
Keep a few spare tiles after the job for future repairs; matching batches later can be impossible.
Check each box has the same batch or shade code before you start laying.
Quantities are estimates. Check product data sheets and local codes, and confirm with your supplier before ordering.

For small tiles the grout joint makes a noticeable difference, so include it.
