About this tool

What the Running Pace Calculator does

Pace is time divided by distance. From one run’s distance and time you can find pace per kilometre and per mile, speed, and the finish time at that pace for other races. The Riegel formula adjusts race predictions for the slowing that happens over longer distances.

Formula

  • Pace = time ÷ distance
  • Speed = distance ÷ time
  • Riegel prediction: T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Distance 10 km
Hours 0
Minutes 52
Seconds 30
Result Value
Pace per kilometre 5:15
Pace per mile 8:27
Speed 11.43
Speed 7.10

How to read the result

Race predictions assume similar training for each distance; marathon predictions from short races are often optimistic without long-run training.

Easy runs are usually 60 to 90 seconds per kilometre slower than race pace.

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Divide your time by the distance run.

Multiply pace per km by 1.609.

Reasonably accurate for trained runners at similar distances; less so for long extrapolations.
