About this tool
What the Fuel Cost Calculator does
Fuel cost is distance divided by fuel economy, times the fuel price. Dividing by distance gives cost per mile, a useful figure for pricing deliveries, mileage claims and comparing vehicles. A return-trip option doubles the distance.
It also works as a fuel cost per mile calculator or a trip fuel cost calculator.
Formula
- Gallons = miles ÷ mpg
- Fuel cost = gallons × price
- Cost per mile = fuel cost ÷ miles = price ÷ mpg
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Distance | 320 miles |
| Return trip | Yes |
| Fuel economy | 28 mpg |
| Fuel price per gallon | $3.60 |
| People sharing the cost | 2 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Fuel cost | $82.29 |
| Cost per mile | $0.13 |
| Fuel needed | 22.9 |
| Fuel needed | 86.5 |
| Cost per person | $41.14 |
| Total miles | 640 |
How to read the result
Real-world fuel economy is usually below the rated figure, especially at motorway speeds, with heavy loads or in cold weather.
Fuel is only part of vehicle cost; for full cost per mile include maintenance, tyres, insurance and depreciation.
