About this tool

What the Freight Rate Calculator does

A truckload freight quote usually combines a linehaul rate per mile, a fuel surcharge (often a per-mile amount tied to diesel prices) and accessorial charges for extra services such as detention, lumper fees or extra stops. This calculator totals them and shows the all-in rate per mile.

Formula

  • Linehaul = miles × rate per mile
  • Fuel surcharge = miles × surcharge per mile
  • Total = max(minimum, linehaul + fuel) + accessorials

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Loaded miles 850
Linehaul rate per mile $2.40
Fuel surcharge per mile $0.55
Extra stops 1
Fee per extra stop $75.00
Detention hours 2
Detention rate per hour $60.00
Other accessorials (lumper, tarp) $0.00
Minimum charge $450
Result Value
Total freight charge $2,703
All-in rate per mile $3.18
Linehaul $2,040
Fuel surcharge $468
Accessorials $195

How to read the result

Spot rates move with market capacity; contract rates trade a little upside for stability.

Deadhead (empty) miles to reach the pickup are a real cost for carriers even if not billed separately.
