Data Transfer Speed Calculator

Calculate how long a file or backup takes to transfer at a given connection speed, allowing for protocol overhead.

  • Runs in your browser
  • Nothing uploaded

The tool

Enter your numbers below. Results update as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.

Everything you enter stays on your own machine. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, which you can confirm in your browser network tab.

What people use it for

  • Planning a cloud migration or backup window
  • Estimating video upload times
  • Choosing an internet plan
  • Explaining why transfers take longer than expected

About this tool

What the Data Transfer Speed Calculator does

Transfer time is file size divided by speed, but sizes are usually in bytes and connection speeds in bits per second, so a factor of eight is easy to miss. This calculator converts the units and applies a real-world efficiency allowance for protocol overhead.

Formula

  • Bits to send = size in bytes × 8
  • Effective speed = line speed × efficiency
  • Time = bits ÷ effective speed in bits per second

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
File size 50
Size unit GB
Connection speed 100
Speed unit Mbps (megabits/s)
Efficiency 90%
Result Value
Transfer time 1 h 14 min 4 s
In hours 1.23
In seconds 4,444
Effective throughput 11.3

How to read the result

Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second. Divide by eight to get megabytes per second: a 100 Mbps line moves at most about 12.5 MB/s.

Uploads are often much slower than downloads on home and office connections, so check the upload speed for backups and cloud migrations.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

About 80 seconds at full speed, or roughly 90 seconds allowing for typical overhead.

Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. One byte is eight bits.

It uses decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), matching how storage and network speeds are usually advertised.
