About this tool

What the Penetration Testing Cost Estimator does

Penetration tests are usually priced by tester days, so cost follows scope. This calculator converts web applications, external IP addresses and internal network testing into days using planning assumptions you can edit, then adds reporting and retesting.

Formula

  • Testing days = applications × days per app + IPs ÷ IPs per day + internal days
  • Total days = (testing + reporting) × (1 + retest allowance)
  • Cost = total days × day rate

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Web applications 2
Days per application 5
External IP addresses 32
IP addresses per day 16
Internal network testing days 5
Reporting days 2
Retesting allowance 20%
Day rate $1,400
Result Value
Estimated cost $31,920
Total tester days 22.8
Hands-on testing days 17.0

How to read the result

Scope drives price more than anything else. Authenticated testing of several user roles, APIs and complex workflows can double the days for a single application.

Ask suppliers to quote retesting separately so you can confirm fixes without paying for a full new test.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

It depends on scope and day rates. A single small web application can take a few days, while large estates take weeks.

Testing commonly runs from a few days to several weeks, plus time for reporting.

At least annually and after major changes is a common practice, and some standards require it.
