About this tool

What the SaaS MRR Calculator does

Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) changes through new customers, expansion, contraction and churn. This calculator builds the MRR bridge for a month and derives annual run rate plus net and gross revenue retention, the metrics investors read first.

Formula

  • Net new MRR = new + expansion − contraction − churned
  • Ending MRR = starting MRR + net new MRR
  • NRR = (starting + expansion − contraction − churned) ÷ starting
  • GRR = (starting − contraction − churned) ÷ starting

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Starting MRR $50,000
New MRR $6,000
Expansion MRR $2,000
Contraction MRR $800
Churned MRR $1,500
Result Value
Ending MRR $55,700
Net new MRR $5,700
ARR run rate $668,400
MRR growth this month 11.4%
Net revenue retention (month) 99.4%
Gross revenue retention (month) 95.4%

How to read the result

Net revenue retention above 100% means existing customers grow faster than they leave, so the business grows even with no new sales. That is the single strongest signal of product value in SaaS.

These retention figures are monthly. Annual NRR is usually quoted on a twelve-month cohort, which is not the same as multiplying the monthly figure by twelve.

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Add up the monthly subscription value of every active customer, converting annual plans to a monthly amount and excluding one-off fees.

The revenue kept from existing customers after expansion, contraction and churn, as a percentage of what they paid at the start.

ARR is the annualised version of MRR, normally MRR multiplied by 12.
