About this tool

What the Final Grade Needed Calculator does

When the final exam counts for a fixed share of the course grade, the score you need is the target grade minus what you already have weighted by the rest of the course, divided by the final’s weight.

Formula

  • Needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Current grade 84%
Final exam weight 30%
Target course grade 88%
Result Value
Score needed on the final 97.3%
Status Reachable
Course grade with 100% on the final 88.8%
Course grade with 0% on the final 58.8%

How to read the result

If the needed score is above 100%, ask about extra credit or focus on a more realistic target.

Check whether your current grade already includes all non-final work; missing assignments change the result.
