Adding a Blog to a Shopify Store Properly

Updated 8 October 2026.

A Shopify blog works best when it answers questions that product pages leave open: how to choose, how to compare, and how to use what you sell. Plan those questions before designing the article template. A useful guide should help a reader make a decision and offer an obvious next step.

Set up the blog in Shopify

Shopify includes a blogging feature. In the current admin, open Content → Blog posts, create an article, and choose or create its blog. Give the blog a descriptive name that fits its purpose, such as buying guides or product care. Shopify documents the setup in its official blog guide.

Before publishing, decide who the blog serves, which product families it supports, and who will maintain it. A small, focused publishing plan is easier to keep useful than a collection of unrelated categories. Keep established handles when they already receive traffic; changes need carefully tested redirects.

Build an article template that helps customers

Put the answer near the beginning. Follow it with the details a shopper needs: selection criteria, limitations, compatibility, care instructions, or examples. Use clear headings and short paragraphs. A comparison table is helpful when readers must weigh the same features across several options.

  • Show a descriptive title and an accurate author or team byline.
  • Use meaningful images with alt text that describes their purpose.
  • Place related products beside the advice they support.
  • Make the next step specific: compare a collection, check a size guide, or contact support.
  • Check the template on mobile and with keyboard navigation.

Keep recommendations honest. If an article describes a product you sell, explain its limitations as well as its benefits. Avoid adding a product block after every paragraph; the guide should remain useful to someone who is still researching.

Prepare the article for search

Choose one main customer question for each article. Write a specific page title and a concise description that match the actual answer. Connect the guide to relevant product and collection pages using descriptive links. Shopify’s SEO documentation covers metadata and the platform’s sitemap support.

Check the published page itself, rather than relying only on the editor preview. Confirm it returns 200, has one main heading, and includes the intended canonical URL. Review any structured data supplied by your theme before adding another app that produces overlapping markup.

Localise the whole customer journey

For another language, translate headings, image text, navigation, metadata and the linked product pages together. Test right-to-left layouts when needed. Give a reviewer the live page so they can assess meaning in context and check that buttons, tables and prices still fit. A partially translated journey creates confusion even when the article itself reads well.

A practical publication checklist

  1. Confirm the main question and intended reader.
  2. Check product claims against current specifications.
  3. Proofread the copy and verify every link.
  4. Review image size, mobile layout and accessibility.
  5. Publish and test the public URL in a signed-out browser.
  6. Set a review date for information likely to change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need WordPress to add a Shopify blog?

No. Start by evaluating Shopify’s native blog. An external publishing system makes sense only when it solves a clear editorial or integration requirement that justifies the extra maintenance.

How often should I publish?

Use a schedule your team can sustain. Prioritise unanswered customer questions and maintain existing guides before adding more articles simply to meet a quota.

How should I measure success?

Track qualified visits, useful product-page clicks, enquiries and assisted purchases. Review whether the guide resolves the question it was written to answer, rather than measuring word count or traffic alone.
