About this tool

What the Long-term Care Cost Calculator does

Long-term care, at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home, can cost hundreds of dollars a day and rises with inflation. A long-term care policy pays a daily or monthly benefit after an elimination period, for a set benefit period. Projecting future costs shows how much of the risk a policy would cover.

It also works as a long-term care insurance calculator.

Formula

  • Future daily cost = today’s cost × (1 + inflation)^years
  • Policy pays the lower of its inflated daily benefit and the daily cost, after the elimination period, for the benefit period
  • Gap = total cost − policy payments

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Daily cost of care today $300
Care cost inflation 4%
Years until care is needed 20
Years of care 3
Policy daily benefit today $200
Benefit inflation protection 3%
Elimination period 90 days
Benefit period 3 years
Result Value
Projected total cost of care $719,784
Uncovered amount $356,756
Paid by the policy $363,028
Share covered 50.4%
Daily cost when care starts $657

How to read the result

Inflation protection matters most for younger buyers; without it, a fixed daily benefit covers less each year.

Hybrid life and long-term care policies are an alternative for people who want a benefit even if care is never needed.

Estimates for planning only. Actual premiums and benefits depend on the insurer, policy terms and underwriting.
