About this tool

What the General Liability Premium Estimator does

General liability premiums are usually calculated on an exposure base, often revenue (per $1,000 of sales) or payroll, multiplied by a rate for the business class. Higher limits, claims history and risk controls adjust the result, and insurers apply a minimum premium.

It also works as a commercial general liability premium estimator or a CGL premium calculator.

Formula

  • Premium = exposure ÷ 1,000 × class rate × limits factor × claims factor
  • Not less than the minimum premium

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Annual revenue (or payroll) $1,200,000
Class rate per $1,000 of exposure 2.5
Limits 1M per occurrence / 2M aggregate
Claims history Average
Minimum premium $500
Result Value
Estimated annual premium $3,000
Per month $250
Effective rate per $1,000 2.50

How to read the result

A business owner’s policy (BOP) bundles general liability with property cover and is often cheaper for small businesses.

Contracts with clients may require specific limits and additional insured endorsements; check before buying.

Estimates for planning only. Actual premiums and benefits depend on the insurer, policy terms and underwriting.
