About this tool
What the Dental Overhead Calculator does
Dental overhead is measured as a percentage of collections. Comparing each category with typical benchmarks shows where a practice spends more than expected. Many general practices run total overhead around 60% to 65% of collections.
Formula
- Category share = category cost ÷ collections
- Total overhead % = total overhead ÷ collections
- Owner income = collections − overhead
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual collections | $1,200,000 |
| Annual overhead | 8 entries |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total overhead | 57.5% |
| Owner income before tax | $510,000 |
| Total overhead | $690,000 |
| Categories above benchmark | None |
How to read the result
Staff costs are usually the largest category; productivity per team member matters more than the hourly wage.
Benchmarks vary by region and specialty; use them as prompts for questions, not targets.
