About this tool
What the Blood Pressure Category Calculator does
Blood pressure is recorded as systolic over diastolic in mmHg. The 2017 ACC/AHA guideline classifies adult readings as normal (below 120/80), elevated (120–129 and below 80), stage 1 hypertension (130–139 or 80–89) and stage 2 (140 or higher, or 90 or higher). Readings above 180/120 need prompt medical attention.
It also works as a blood pressure risk calculator or a blood pressure chart.
Formula
- Category from the higher-risk of systolic and diastolic ranges
- Mean arterial pressure ≈ diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3
- Pulse pressure = systolic − diastolic
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Systolic (top number) | 128 mmHg |
| Diastolic (bottom number) | 82 mmHg |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Category | Stage 1 hypertension |
| Mean arterial pressure | 97 |
| Pulse pressure | 46 |
How to read the result
A single reading is not a diagnosis. Diagnosis uses averages of several readings on different occasions, ideally including home or ambulatory measurements.
Sit quietly for five minutes, back supported, feet flat and arm at heart level before measuring.
General information, not medical advice. Speak to a qualified health professional before making changes to diet, exercise or treatment.
