About this tool

What the Font Licensing Cost Calculator does

Fonts are licensed separately for each type of use: desktop licences by number of users, web licences by monthly pageviews or domains, and app licences per application. Costs multiply with the number of styles (weights and italics). Enter the foundry’s prices to budget a brand’s typography.

It also works as a font asset licensing calculator.

Formula

  • Desktop = ceil(users ÷ 5) × price × styles
  • Web = ceil(pageviews ÷ 100,000) × price × styles
  • Total = (desktop + web + app) × (1 − family discount)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Styles needed (weights and italics) 6
Desktop users 10
Desktop price per style per 5 users $50.00
Monthly web pageviews 250,000
Web price per style per 100,000 pageviews $40.00
Mobile apps 1
App licence per style per app $150
Family package discount 20%
Result Value
Estimated licensing cost $1,776
Desktop licences $600
Web licences $720
App licences $900

How to read the result

Licensing models differ widely by foundry (some sell perpetual web licences, others subscriptions); read the EULA for your exact use.

Using fewer weights reduces cost and also speeds up websites.
