About this tool
What the CD Rate Calculator does
A certificate of deposit (CD) pays a fixed rate for a fixed term. Banks quote the annual percentage yield (APY), which already includes compounding. This calculator projects the interest and maturity value and shows the penalty if you withdraw early, which is usually a number of months of interest.
Formula
- Interest = deposit × ((1 + APY)^(months ÷ 12) − 1)
- Penalty ≈ months of penalty × deposit × APY ÷ 12
- Early payout = deposit + interest earned so far − penalty
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Deposit | $10,000 |
| APY | 4.5% |
| Term | 12 months |
| Early withdrawal penalty | 3 months of interest |
| Withdraw early after | 6 months |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Value at maturity | $10,450.00 |
| Interest earned | $450.00 |
| Early withdrawal penalty | $112.50 |
| Amount received if withdrawn early | $10,110.02 |
How to read the result
If the penalty is larger than the interest earned so far, withdrawing early returns less than you deposited.
Laddering CDs of different terms keeps some money maturing regularly while capturing longer-term rates.
