About this tool

What the Customs Duty Calculator does

Import charges usually have two parts: customs duty on the customs value, and import VAT or GST charged on the customs value plus the duty. Whether freight and insurance are included in the customs value depends on the country, so this calculator lets you choose.

Formula

  • Customs value = goods (FOB) or goods + freight + insurance (CIF)
  • Duty = customs value × duty rate
  • Import VAT = (goods + freight + insurance + duty) × VAT rate

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Goods value $10,000
Freight $800
Insurance $100
Customs value basis CIF (goods + freight + insurance)
Duty rate 5%
Import VAT or GST rate 20%
Other import fees $150
Result Value
Total import charges $2,984
Customs duty $545
Import VAT or GST $2,289
Customs value $10,900
Total landed cost $13,884

How to read the result

Duty rates depend on the product’s tariff classification and origin; free trade agreements can reduce them to zero if rules of origin are met.

VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim import VAT, so it affects cash flow more than final cost.

Estimates only. Customs valuation and rates depend on classification, origin and local rules; check with the customs authority or a broker.
