Local SEO

Local Search Tool

Look up real local business results for a phrase and location through Google's official Places API, not by scraping search pages.

  • Uses an official API
  • Keys stay on our server

The tool

Enter what people search for and where. Results come straight from the Places API, in the order it returns them.

Loading the tool…

Your query is sent from our server to the provider named on this page, using our API credentials, and the provider response is shown to you. We do not store the query or the results. The provider handles the request under its own terms and privacy policy.

What this tool checks

  • Which businesses the Places API Text Search returns for a phrase and location
  • The order the API returns them in
  • Each business's address, primary type, rating and number of reviews
  • Whether a business is marked as temporarily or permanently closed
  • Website and Google Maps links, and the Place ID for each result
  • The exact query, country and language sent, and when the results were retrieved

How to read the results

  1. Read the result list as "what the Places API matched", not as a ranking on Google Search or Maps.
  2. Check your own listing appears and that its name, address, category and website are correct.
  3. A closed status or a wrong category is worth fixing in Google Business Profile.
  4. Try nearby place names and different phrasings: the API matches the words you send.

About this tool

What this tool shows

Local searches such as “dentist in Leeds” or “pizza 10001” are answered from Google’s data about places. This tool sends your phrase and location to the Google Places API Text Search, the official way to query that data, and shows the businesses it returns: name, address, primary type, rating, number of reviews, opening status, website, a Google Maps link and the Place ID.

It is useful for checking whether a business is found for the words customers use, whether its details are right, and which other businesses match the same search. It is not a rank tracker. The Places API returns relevant places for a text query; it is a different product from the results a person sees in Google Search or the Maps app, which are personalised by the searcher’s location, language, history and device. The numbered positions in the results are the order the API returned them, nothing more.

Why an API and not a search page

Many local rank tools scrape Google results pages, which breaks Google’s terms and produces numbers that are hard to reproduce. We only use data we are allowed to use. That is why the tool needs a Places API key, why results carry Google Maps attribution, and why there is no button to download names, ratings and addresses: Google Maps Platform terms allow storing Place IDs, but restrict caching or exporting other Places content. The CSV export therefore contains each result’s position, Place ID and Maps link, which you can use to look the place up again later.

Location and device

The city or postcode you enter is added to the search text, and the country is sent as a region code so ambiguous names such as “Cambridge” resolve sensibly. This is not the same as searching from a specific spot: a person standing in one neighbourhood sees results biased to where they are. The Places API also has no device setting, so mobile and desktop cannot be compared here. The device field explains that rather than pretending otherwise.

Getting the most from it

  • Search the way customers would: the service plus the area, with and without words such as “near me” replaced by the town name.
  • Check your own listing is present, with the right category, address and website. Fix mistakes in Google Business Profile.
  • Look at closed statuses. A business wrongly marked as closed loses visits until it is corrected.
  • Use the Place ID from your result with the Review Link Generator to build a direct review link.

When the provider is not configured

If the site owner has not added a Places API key, the tool says so and offers a link that opens the same search in Google Maps instead. Nothing is simulated and no invented results are shown.

What happens to your data

Your query is sent from our server to Google and the response is shown to you. We do not store the query or the results, and they are not added to analytics.

Limits and honest caveats

  • The Places API is not Google Search or the Maps app. Results can differ from what a person sees, because those products personalise by location, history and device.
  • There is no device or exact-location parameter: the location is sent as words in the query, so results are not a GPS-precise check.
  • This tool needs a Google Places API key on our server. Without one it shows an ordinary Google Maps link instead.
  • Google Maps Platform terms restrict storing or exporting Places content other than Place IDs, so the export contains Place IDs and Maps links only.
  • Results are not stored by us and are not tracked over time.

Google Places API (New), Text Search — Your phrase, location, country and language are sent from our server to Google using the site owner's API key. Google bills the key owner per request, and the quota is set in their Google Cloud project. Results are shown with Google Maps attribution.

What people use it for

  • Checking a business appears for the searches customers actually make
  • Spotting wrong categories, addresses or closed statuses on a listing
  • Seeing which competitors match the same search in a town
  • Collecting Place IDs to build review links
  • Comparing how results change between nearby towns or postcodes

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

No. It shows what the Places API returns for the words you send. Google Search and the Maps app personalise results by the searcher's location, device and history, so their order can differ.

Google Maps Platform terms restrict storing or exporting Places content other than Place IDs. The export contains Place IDs and Maps links, which you can use to look places up again.

Not with this API, which has no device parameter. The tool says so rather than simulating it.

It needs a Google Places API key configured by the site owner. Until then you can open the same search in Google Maps from the link provided.

No. All results come from the official Places API under Google Maps Platform terms.
